Most major beauty pageants were televised in the nineteen eighties and nineties, and in my household the title of Miss Maryland was the one most revered. Even though I was told that I could be anything that I wanted to be, it wasn’t entirely true. From a young age I understood that pageants were an exclusive club that only permitted women of a certain height, weight, social class, and education to compete for the crown.
