Lately I’ve been making a list of places that I’d like to travel to next and Miami, Florida is at the top of my list. In 1998 I had the pleasure of visiting Miami to see a Keith Haring retrospective and I marveled at the color of the ocean, the houses, the buildings, the clothing, the art! Everything was so ELECTRIC and ALIVE and BEAUTIFUL. When I combine the words electric and Miami I come up with Miami Sound Machine. (Try not to dance to the song CONGA!Impossible! RIGHT?)
Everything about the words Miami Sound Machine screams movement and I thoroughly enjoy the challenge of creating movement and a pulse in a two-dimensional object. Can I also describe a place in a painting? Can I encapsulate electricity? If a painting can be a way to communicate the sensation of a memory or precipitate the manifestation of desires, can you allow yourself to be swept away? Miami Sound Machine is a painting, a band, a time machine, an airplane, a memory, an augury, and a vehicle to another place, but who is it transporting and when?
